We’re 20 games into the 2019-2020 NBA season. We’ve seen some amazing things from the Dallas Mavericks this year. How many of us predicted that Luka Doncic would be an MVP candidate? Probably not that many.
There’s a lot to like about this team. After a rough start to the season, they’ve made some noticeable improvements on offense and defense. Although their two losses to the New York were devastating, it has proved to be a turning point. Ever since that game and the following win over the Toronto Raptors, the Mavs have been a different team.
After starting the season with one of the worst defenses in the league, the Mavericks are now 15th in Defensive Rating.
Of course, we already know how good their offense is. They have the number one offense in the league and currently the greatest offenses of all time. And that’s with Kristaps Porzingis still finding his way after coming back from a torn ACL.
Imagine how much better they’ll be when he’s back to being The Unicorn!
There have been some stand-out role-players lately. Tim Hardaway Jr. has become the Mavericks’ third star they needed, Dorian Finney-Smith has been an elite defender, and J.J. Barea has provided veteran leadership.
There are still some areas they can improve in, whether this year or this summer. We’re still not high on Dwight Powell and there’s a question of whether or not Tim Hardaway Jr. can maintain his level of play.
In this episode of Dallas Hoops Fancast, we discuss the state of the Mavericks – the good and the bad. We talk about their elite offense, their improving defense, what improvements need to be made, and some surprises.
We also look at the results from four listener polls and get the audience’s thoughts on trades.
